Scammers are active on online marketplaces across Nigeria. Here are 10 warning signs every buyer and seller must recognise before completing any transaction.
Online marketplaces make buying and selling faster than ever. But they also attract scammers who prey on unsuspecting users. Here are 10 warning signs that should make you stop and think carefully before completing a transaction.
1. The Price Is Suspiciously Low
A brand-new iPhone listed for N50,000 when it retails for N500,000 is a classic scam signal. If the price seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Scammers use unrealistic discounts to create urgency and cloud your judgment.
2. The Seller Refuses to Meet In Person
Legitimate local sellers are usually willing to meet at a safe, public location. If a seller insists on delivery-only or claims to be "out of town" and can only ship, be very cautious — especially for high-value items.
3. Full Payment Demanded Before You See the Item
Be wary of any seller who demands full payment via bank transfer or mobile money before showing you the item. Always inspect before you pay.
4. Blurry or Stolen Photos
Scammers often steal product photos from other listings or manufacturer websites. Do a reverse image search (Google Images) to check whether the photo appears elsewhere online under a different price.
5. Vague or Copy-Paste Description
Genuine sellers describe their specific item with personal details. If a description reads like generic product marketing copy with no personal information, it may be a fake listing.
6. High-Pressure Tactics
"Another buyer is coming tomorrow" or "Offer expires tonight" — these are pressure tactics designed to stop you thinking clearly. A genuine seller will wait while you make a considered decision.
7. New Account With No History
Check the seller's profile. A fresh account with no reviews, no activity history, and no verified contact information should prompt serious questions.
8. Moves Conversation Off the Platform Immediately
If a seller immediately pushes you to WhatsApp or personal email and requests payment through an untraceable method, that is a major red flag.
9. No Receipt or Documentation
For electronics, vehicles, and appliances, always ask for the original receipt, warranty card, or proof of purchase. Refusal to provide documentation is a warning sign.
10. Your Instincts Say Something Is Wrong
Trust your gut. If something about a listing or a seller feels off, walk away. There are thousands of legitimate listings on Adorix from verified sellers in your area.
